“Humidity Tray” is a term that is widely used to refer to the drip tray that goes under a Bonsai pot. Besides adding a finishing touch to your Bonsai presentation, it also prevents water from running all over your table when you water your tree.
It also helps in keeping your bonsai soil moist. Even with the best watering efforts, keeping the soil moist at the bottom of your pot can be tricky. (That’s why submerging your bonsai pot in a sink of water every now and then is a good idea; it hydrates the bottom portion of the soil and roots). Gravel is typically placed in the tray and water added directly to the tray and gravel. Evaporation helps maintain the “humidity” level of the pot and soil above.
Larger humidity trays are sometimes used to hold and display more than one bonsai tree. The tray gives your bonsai grouping a natural looking display platform.
We include a humidity tray with every Bonsai tree we sell - for free. We don't do the up-sell humidity pot revenue enhancer at $5 a pop thing.
